Music Preview!

Here´s a premix of the main tunnel song, keep in mind that this version will change until the game is released, specially the drums section.

There will be more atmospheric tracks, don´t worry. I just wanted to keep alive the original rithm, even if it´s for the first section of the game.

About the Metroid fight music: There will be a variation of the fight song for every evolution, Omegas will feature a new song and the Queen battle song will be a remake of the original one.
I´m finishing the Alpha Metroid fight song for the upcoming trailer.

Started working on the third ruins, I´m still sketching the rooms while finishing some original tiles for the outside part of the temple.

Anyway, let me know what you think about the music style, all your comments are really appreciated (Yes, I read them all).

DUDE!!!!I like what you did with the song, it sounds awesome.can't wait for your next demo.

It seems like it would be a bit distracting, BUT IT'S STILL AWESOME...
keep up the great work Dr.

I think its coming quite well! Keep it up!

The game is looking great right now!
Good idea with different music for every metroid evolution.
My only suggestion for the music is to have the drums a little less overpowering. Ether make the other instruments a bit louder or make the drums a little more quiet. good job though
Unknown said…
yeah man I like what you've come up with thus far for the music. If you have time I hope you'll add the ability to play the game through with no suit like the first metroid. So far I am liking your remake of Return of Samus more than the other one. Keep up the good work and thank you for doing this. Can you accept any donations?
Anonymous said…
It's good, but I think it's a bit too techno, like Fusion. It should have more of a natural atmospheric feel to it, kinda like the other Metroid games. Anyways, good job!
Anonymous said…
I can really get behind this. Has a certain retro sounding quality to it. I'll have to reserve final judgement until I see it matched with visuals, but I like where it's going.

I personally loved the song. It's really catchy.

My older brother liked it alot too.I Can't wait untill this game come out!
Anonymous said…
Mmmm... awesome. Definitely great. Looking forward to the change in the drum part, cause as said before, its a little overpowering. Also i personally wouldnt mind a little "dirtier", chip-tuneish feel, ala Cave Story Soundtrack, should you know that game.
Anonymous said…
you did a good job. But i wish tahat the songs become more athmospheric and less techno-like.
Anonymous said…
The music isnt even close to being anything bad but it doesn't fit it with the metroid series. It's too upbeat, it needs more grit.
kattkieru said…
Hey, I generally just lurk on your RSS feed but I had to write and say the music sounds absolutely great. I disagree on the grit thing -- I think you'll need grit for some areas but for the entry section this music is terrific as-is. It may not be a 100% match for old Metroid tracks, but I like the flavor it has.
Anonymous said…
I really liked it...

This song not only sounds like the original but Dr.M really enriched the music with sounds that you would normally hear in a techno song.

I think this song really suits the game and is true to the original opening music. even tho Metroid favors fluid/orchestrated music in its other games. Metroid2's opening area music was technoish. Remember This is a "another Metroid 2 remake" not a new Metroid game. I think the music should sound like it would fit with the old game to be a true remake. I am looking foreword to more of your remixed songs
Anonymous said…
is there anyway i could download this song? i found my self repeating the same youtube video over and over again just so i could listen to this as i was working on my computer
Anonymous said…
I really like the track, altho I cant help but feel like its just a little too soft.

It should have a little more bump to it to get you into the action. Just seems kind of soothing in a way.
Anonymous said…
I'm wondering about the "silent" rooms. Will the music just be a few, soft beeps every seven seconds or so like before, because I didn't enjoy the short lacks of music. In the remake, could you add some extra background music for the "silent" rooms?
Anonymous said…
No offense, but the beta music you showed is a little, well, melancholy (that's the best thing I can come up with for describing the music). Also, even if this was a Metroid Fusion remake instead (and of course it's not), the music is a little too techno. In the remake, could you make the music a little less techno, and a little more inviting?
Anonymous said…
This doesn't match the Metroid series at all. Needs more atmosphere.
Anonymous said…
i agree with DAN DA DECEP, it needs to be more natural... you fell like you are going trough a natural enviroment, just imagine what kind of music you would hear in your head if you were in a cave (temple etc..) , its still great though love the retro fell.
Just thought I'd add my voice to the cheering section . . .
I look forward to each post of your progress.
Keep up the awesome work!

Looks great! I just have to say, the project looks incredible so far. I can't wait to see what a metroid fight looks like. This got me so excited I went and bought metroid ii on ebay and beat as soon as it arrived.
Anywho, I just have a few suggestions about what I saw in the preview and the demo. First off, I think Samus should run a little faster. Second, the I think the power bomb effect should look like it did in Fusion and MZM. It just looks good and consistency is always welcome.
In Fusion and MZM, (I'm not sure about the other ones) when you jump, a little cloud of dust appears when you land. If this is possible, adding things like that really bring a game to life.
This is really looking amazing. Once you've released the complete version, you should wait a few months (In that time I think you could easily get over 10,000 downloads) and then send your work over to nintendo. According to such completely reliable sources such as wikipedia, the fine chaps over at nintendo's R&D1 were considering making a metroid ii remake just like MZM but by that time R&D1 broke up. Sending this over could make... I donno... show them how good it would be.
Anonymous said…
Woah, 57 metroids? Does that include the normal metroids near the end of the game? In the original I think there were 47 total.
Anonymous said…
Don't like it. It sounds like some song you'd hear in a club. The heavy drums and techno sound detract from the atmosphere.
Lazure said…
Very nice music! I like it, however, I do agree, maybe a little less techno for the main tunnel theme? Though, it would be nice in some other part of the game, maybe. :) It's a nice track in itself, just perhaps not for the exact purpose being proposed.

Off topic question: You use GameMaker, correct? I watched the 'room making' video, and I was always wondering...

I always wanted to make my game similar to Metroid, with my own storyline, characters, enemies, powerups and weapons.. and a unique world. However, I can't program anything, so watching you make that room in the video made me wonder...

Is there gonna be any engine sources released from AM2R that can be used to create custom projects we may want to do ourselves? My idea was to create a game called Meredith, where a girl on earth falls into a hole and finds a whole new world underneath, that she has to find a way out of. Her abilities would be unique and different. I can do artwork and sprite work no problem, it's the lack of programming ability that gets me.

Hey that's really awesome, well done. Some people are saying it's to technory/not atmospheric enough, but I think it suits the main tunnel in the same way it did in the original. I hope the other music is more atmospheric though. Anyway, keep up the good work, I'm really looking forward to this.

i was thinking about ways to make the track more epic and subtly tell of the impending doom (you know, still keep it spunky but with undertones of forshadowing?)

the best thin I could think of would be to change the violens(?) in the background to create an augemented or diminshed chord, or a four part harmony would make wonderful ear candy.

On a similar note. to make the intro more dinamic, I suggest to have an intro that's more quiet, then when you move on tho the loop, to build up to a much stronger climax with multiple instruments or sounds.

Oh. and it could just be my comp's sound system, but i thought the bass part could really be pumped up.

i've only work with real instruments, not synthetic ones, so I'm not sure if my ideas are even possible. You're doing a wonderful job. keep it up :D

That is one of the best "The Tunnel" remakes I have ever heard, besides Metroid Metal's. It would be cool if, every time you defeat all the metroids of an area and go back through the tunnels, you hear a different version of the song, or even a different song. This song rocks, though.

Excellent work! I'm really psyched to see this project. I have a question for you. Click my username to send me an e-mail, I would really appreciate it.

Hey, I'm also an electronic musician (for the last 10 years, but just a hobby).

Simple suggestion: Slow down the tempo just a bit. I know you're trying to stay true to Metroid 2, but I think the gold standard for Metroid music in my mind is something more like Prime, which focuses on the atmosphere and more subtle interweaving of the themes.

Also, yes, I think the drums could be made more interesting. Just warping the sounds a bit to make them sound futuristic rather than a normal drum set may be enough.

Keep up the good work, I'm really excited about this project!
Anonymous said…
I'm quite happy you went with this style of music. It matches the style of the Metroid games well. Continuing to look forward to the game.
Oy said…
Well, I've listened to it about 6 times in a row to test if it can be endured over time, and the answer is a resounding YES. :-)

You might want to make the snapping beat a little quieter, or maybe a different sound perhaps...

Still, it sounds good so far.
Keep it up. :-)
Anonymous said…
I would suggest to start the tune out with out the drums, then when it repeats itself, the drums kinda come in (maybe fade in)?
Anonymous said…
The music is pretty good, but theres one thing that u might want to change...its a bit too 80´s disco-like. Makes me think about some aerobic class music for middle aged women =P

I know you said that the drums will change, but still I suggest that u at least try the original proge-rock -style drum beat where it goes like this:

hihat: x x x x x x x x
snare: x x
bassd: x x

Currently the disco drum loop increases the tempo of the song and therefore changes it in a negative way which I dont think it fits the atmosphere very well...it kind of makes you want to hurry up and thats not what Metroid games are about (except maybe in the very end =)

And maybe you could try adding some distortion to the main keyboard to make it darker and less happy-happy-joy-joy?
Anonymous said…
Shit, my demonstration for the original drum loop is not displayed correctly after posting beacuse of the white spaces..so ill try again (_ = empty:

hihat: x_x_x_x_x_x_x_x_
snare: ___x________x___
bassd: x_____x_________

Man, I have to say I don't know if I like it. We all know metroid series have that atmospheric creepy music and stuff, but this song (the tunnel) is an exception, I'd say its somewhat "happy" (I can't think of a better word). I know you want to stay close to metroid 2, and thats why I like it,but thinking about the song itself I see I don't like it. For me it seems like an old "house" song... I know you said you wanted the songs in techno style (like fusion), but it's way too techno. Fusion don't go at that level, it still have some "real" instrumments, with some "semi-epic" feeling, and that would be cool, would help with the atmospheric thing, as others already said.
Anonymous said…
Not to go off topic, but some of the backgrounds from Metroid Fusion would be great for the Metroid II remake. The background from Sector 4 (AQA) would be perfect for the second ruins (you said in one blog that the second ruins would probably be a water treatment plant). Also, the background from Sector 6 (NOC) would be great for the third ruins (you decided that the third ruins would be a mining area, and the background of Sector 6 appears to have mining tools and minerals in the background, to go along with the fact that it appears underground). The backgrounds you used from Chozodia from Metroid: Zero Mission and Sector 1 (SRX) were great for the first ruins. I have no idea what background should be used for the fourth ruins or the hive.

I Just finished playing though Metroid 2 again.

And when I got to the spring ball upgrade area. I was completely surprised by a mini boss that i forgot all about...

I'm not saying that you Dr.M have a bad memory like I do but I just wanted to throw that out there in case you forgot also :o
Anonymous said…
I like it, I think it being upbeat is perfectly fine, it's not that out of place in a Metroid game. Still as said earlier it's a bit too techno. I personally would try and emulate MP a bit more and make it more drum and bassish. But in the end it's up to you so do what you want :).
SAC/Black_Yoshi said…
Sounds awesome. Maybe deeper into the tunnels, the tone should darken.
Unknown said…
In my opinion, it's not atmospheric at all. I say hear the music from Metroid Fusion, that and Super Metroid in my opinion have nailed it with the music.
Anonymous said…
i like it! it's pretty similar to the original but keeps up with today's style.
and i commented a couple post's ago, I'm not sure you saw it so here it was:

i think you should include x in cut scenes (if possible, that is)

like, for example, before the first omega metroid fight, samus stops at some ruins,(remembering her childhood or something like that)and an x sneaks up on her, then out of no where an omega metroid eats it, samus turns around, unaware of the x that had been there moments before.

tell me what you think.
Anonymous said…
It sounded very good. The original rhythm was appropriately clear. IMHO, you need to include some electronic, or "space" -themes to the soundtrack. It's an essential part of a sci-fi adventure (think Blade Runner or Mass Effect).
Anonymous said…
the music is cool, but i think some musi from super metroid could probally be used in some areas where a remix of some of the old metroid 2 music wouldn't sound good in, or in the chozo ruin area use kinda of the same music zero mission used and it would be cool to hear a remix of the green section of brinstar from super metroid.
Anonymous said…
I'm going to take a side trip off topic...

I was wondering if anyone was looking forward to non-metroid bosses. Or if ppl would rather just have the metroids making it more like the classic. I'd play it either way
Anonymous said…
i agree on the boss thing, but i disagree on having the springball boss in the game. but to bring the feel of the planet some metroid fusion bosses would be cool to have in there.(no nightmare and no box, because i do not see a point in having mechanical bosses on sr-388)
Anonymous said…
You should keep Arachnus (the boss guarding the spring ball) in the remake. However, you should have some bosses guarding the beam weapons.
Anonymous said…
i thought that the springball boss was the only non-metroid boss in the game, and i think metroid fusion bosses should guard items like super missles, powerbombs, varia and gravity suits, screw attack, space jump, plasma, wave and ice beams, and the speed boost\
i think serris should also be put in the game along with a few other bosses andthe music from the underwater part of sector 4 and super metroid's brinistar ( the green area) should be put in the game in some areas
Anonymous said…
are you going to be able to play the origanel version like in ZM
Anonymous said…
I know a lot of people have mentioned this already, and it doesn't have much to do with the music, but it's such a good idea I'd like to really clarify that I think it'd be awesome.

You HAVE to have some subtle references to the X in the game, as they would be living on SR388 in a diminished an oppressed state. I don't know why but this idea just strikes me as incredibly cool.
Anonymous said…
i agree. although i feel like the only one mentioning it. some of the bosses you fight in metroid fusion should also be seen in the remake seeing that all of the species on sr-388 are threatened by the metroids existance, even though you see that some are more populated than others. please if any of the other fans think that some metroid fusion bosses should be added plus a cutscene of the rapidly X when you beat the game, please comment.
Anonymous said…
i donno the fusion bosses were not just from SR-388 they were from a lot of different places. Besides if there are bosses in this game i think they should be brand new and not copies. and there should only be like 2-5
SAC/Black_Yoshi said…
Some bosses in Fusion were not from SR388. Just don't overdo the item guardians, and kinda alter some tone of the music.
Anonymous said…
Listen. It was already stated that the only non-metroid boss to be put in the Metroid II remake is Arachnus (the boss guarding the spring ball in the original Metroid II and the morph ball in Metroid Fusion). However, I think that there should at least be some extra bosses guarding the beam weapons and the screw attack.
Anonymous said…
The song got sort of distracting, it sounds like out of the game flow. I would suggest going less eletronic and put a bit more of "normal" instruments... even that being a brand-new-savage-world melody, it could be a little slower, maybe have a second version of it when you're somewhat deeper on the planet with this less happy/more dark-immersive feeling.
Anonymous said…
I say it's coming along real good. i suggest making the drums a little less strong, and making the theme slightly louder. also, why not make it feel a little bit more like you're in a tunnel? maybe add a slight echo.
Your project is great. The demo played awesome and the mapping looks very good.
I wish you the best. :)

Greetings from Germany.

New here, but i'm gonna keep checking back -- this looks to be the coolest thing since ZM in terms of metroid! I liked M2 a lot, but the original is no where near as revered as M1 or SM nowadays due to its never having been remade, so this would be one of the best things to happen to it in a long time.

I myself am currently pooling ideas for a Metroid 5 game (no plans to actually make it YET, just coming up with ideas (its what i do) :P) and i may get a forum / blog up and running in that regard. So far i'm just designing a story! :D

Anyway, love the look of this and wish you the best of luck with this project! (never know, the Big N might even hire you to make an official M2 remake :P)
Anonymous said…
I don't know if you read these comments, I just saw this project on Youtube, and I'm amazed! I used to make games in Game maker too, but I've stopped with it because it was too much trouble making all the sprites (I like to make things myself, and I'm an excellent spriter, just not a fast one).

This song is one of the best remixes I've heard, and I think it captures the feeling of the beginning of the journey well, as opposed to later in the game when it's less of a "this is going to be a great adventure", but more of a "I've gotta get out of here fast". What this remix does is capture the feeling that you shouldn't be afraid (at least not yet >:)) perfectly.

Back when I was young I borrowed this game, and I could get through the first part of the main area with ease, but then came the first cave area, and I got SO scared of the music I just stopped playing. As long as the rest of the music captures that feeling, the music in this game will be alright.

I know this game is an inspiration to many people who would like to create there own game too, and I think I'm going to start with Game Maker soon, too.
Anonymous said…
I thought it would be like the music in the demo. That was extremely catchy and I really liked it alot. I know how hard it can be to sequence video game music, but you should try and make it faster and bouncier.
Unknown said…
I don't really think I can see myself playing Metroid to a song of that style. While it is good for what it is, it just seems too upbeat and techno-ish, as if it should be its own song rather than a soundtrack for a game. I'm certainly not saying that it's not good. I think it'd work well enough for everyone to play the game to it for sure, though I just don't think it's the Metroid style.
Anonymous said…
could you take that snapping noise out?? its kinda annoying other than that the song is great
Anonymous said…
quick suggestion: i think you should change the samus sprites, even if only a little. remember long ago, the joy of playing 2d metroid games, the samus sprites have always been deferente.
Unknown said…
somebody already said this, but I am making a metroid 5 also, I already have the story, screenshots, most of the maps, Items, enemies are almost done, bosses, areas, stuff like that. I am close to coming out with a trailer.
Anonymous said…
Don't like it that much. the melody itself is nice, but the rythmic doesn't sounds right for a metroid song. It needs a more punchy beat IMO. Not necessarily the heavymetal style like in the first video you made, but more energic, here it sounds lame.
Anonymous said…
I like this song...but it seems a little intrusive for a non-fight song in a metroid game. Tuning down the drums will help, and maybe making it a little quieter overall? Anyway, I'm not trying to hate...I really do think its a good piece.
Anonymous said…
I know you're trying to keep the original music alive but think about it:what did the music sound like in the other games.I mean the music of crateria in metroid zero mission was creepy and eerie just like the music of super metroid.try and make the music more creepy as you go deeper into s
SR388

Ok im probibly the only one here whos actualy played a metroid game that has this song in it. On Yo yo games.com, theres a metroid game called #1 Metroid game, and it has the song that Dr. M64 made. I think that it works prety well, for the begining of the game, but for later on i sugjust using more scarry and intimidating music.
